English 11+ Tutors

Passing the 11+ is an important step for any child who wants to gain entry into the country’s best schools. Performing well in the English exam is crucial, and comprehension, grammar and vocabulary will be put to the test.

Our expert tutors understand the process, and their expertise can’t be found in a textbook. Our private tuition is far removed from competitive playground talk and endless past papers.

Our private tuition is not tailored to simply passing exams, because where’s the fun in that? All of our 11+ tutors go out of their way to make their lessons as fun as they can, incorporating every child’s interests into their learning.

I think of tutoring like a conversation (the fancy educationalist word is ‘dialogic), and that exchange starts before we meet. After speaking with the family I ask for writing samples before our first session so I can perform a diagnostic exercise and assess strengths, weaknesses and potential objectives. Each session is then structured around developing close reading and analytical skills...

My approach to private tuition is very much the same as my thorough teaching within the classrooms of the four independent schools I have had the pleasure of working in: create very clear, tangible goals for each of my students with a dash of good Northern humour and kindness to truly bring their self-confidence and ambitions to the surface. I...

I believe that the most important virtue in a tutor is the ability to empathise with a student's cognitive position. When teaching I guide a student through the mental steps needed to accomplish the goal of the lesson. I typically spend much of a lesson in dialogue with the student. I break this up with exercises to embed and reinforce key...

The human condition has always been of utmost importance to me, and this led to my relentless questioning of why people’s circumstances are so dissimilar in different parts of the world. My understanding of who I am and what to do with my life has been profoundly shaped by geography. The stark difference in standard of living, development and well-being...

As an individual, I am enthusiastic, determined and a real ‘people person’. Having sat exams every year for the past 8 years, and continuing to do so I feel I am immersed in the challenges of modern academia and this will serve as a real advantage in my approach to my tutees. I think different approaches are required depending on...

I want to instil confidence in my students, so in time, they will want to challenge themselves to develop their skills further – discovering the joy of learning! Doing this in a supported and safe environment allows the student to push themselves in ways they might not have thought possible, allowing them to be more versatile and prepared for whatever...

I do not adopt a ‘one size fits all’ approach; I teach each student as an individual: find out what motivates them and what scares them. Thus, I can work with the students to ensure they fulfil their maximum potential and that they learn using the techniques and methods that are most effective for them....

My job as a tutor is to ensure that my students are understanding and engaging with material, and enjoying their learning! So often, schools are unable to provide an individualised approach to learning, as they are required to follow a strict curriculum to prepare for exams. I think that it’s really important that we work together to ensure that sessions...

Making the subject fun and interesting is the key to engaging a student’s mind. Breaking down complicated concepts into small digestible pieces of information allows the student to grasp complex subjects they were once afraid/not sure of tackling....

I am continuously striving to find new ways to make learning more fun and engaging. Having worked as a professional actor for a year now I understand how hard English literature and Drama can be, however, also how much fun they can be.  I have had lead roles in two Shakespeare plays, a Christmas show and recently a piece of...
