LIVING AND LEARNING IN SOHO
Soho is an exciting, bustling and colourful area of London. Famous for its nightlife, links to the movie industry, media, pubs, bars and restaurants, there is always something going on in Soho. Why not take a study break from your Music tuition with us and check out famous stores such as Blackmarket Records or Vinyl Junkies?
There are a couple of theories as to where Soho got its name from. Some say that it was a rallying call, used by the 1st Duke of Monmouth to call his men at the battle of Sedgemoor on July 6th 1685. Others believe it was a hunting call, likely linked to today’s sometimes used ‘tally ho!’ which is called upon the sighting of quarry. Let your mind drift back through history…the area of Soho used to be rural, with a few farmsteads and was taken by Henry VIII as a royal park for the Palace of Whitehall in 1536. Some believe that the King himself may well have used the very hunting call, giving the area its name!
Soho has a rich culture, including a taste of France originating from the French Huguenots who sought refuge in London in the 17th Century. It became known for its diverse and mixed cultures, and thrived as a bohemian area full of Moorish, Algerian and French cuisine.
For those studying history or medicine with us, why not take your study break over at Lexington Street? Here a memorial stands to the father of public health and epidemiology himself, Dr John Snow! Dr Snow identified the source of Soho’s outbreak of cholera as a public water pump, and as a consequence, changed public sanitation forever in London and other cities around the globe. Inspirational.
Soho also has a buzzing music scene. Take your breaks from your music tuition by heading over to Denmark Street or Carnaby Street to soak up the atmosphere. Soho is also believed to be the first place in the UK where modern Jazz (bebop) was first performed, drawing in large audiences. For such a small area of London, Soho certainly has a lot going on!
