I have been a full-time private tutor for two years, following graduating from my preclinical medical studies with a 1st Class BSc in Medical Sciences with Surgical Sciences, with Dean’s list honours and a prize for best research project presentation.
My educational experience began alongside my medical training, throughout which I was involved with the Target Medicine widening participation scheme providing insight, advice and mentorship to prospective medical students from under-privileged, inner-city, state schools. Furthermore, I lectured for the UCL Anatomy Society, and taught younger years through the medical school’s near-peer anatomy scheme. Finally, I held the position of Workshop Coordinator for the UCL Drama Society. Here it was my responsibility to devise and facilitate a programme of engaging workshops for enthusiastic future dramaturgs.
As a professional tutor, I have catered to a diverse range of students each requiring carefully constructed schemes of work around their specific educational context. I have served as a tutor for five terms at Lionheart School, an interim educational centre for students who have left other schools for any number of reasons. I have extensive experience working with students with SEN, including dyspraxia, dyscalculia, dyslexia, atypical autism and elective mutism. My time here has illuminated the importance of trust and rapport. A tutor is not simply a teacher, but a mentor, and as such, should always be someone that a student feels comfortable to approach with any concerns or questions.
Aside from tuition within the school, I tutor several private clients, including prospective medical applicants. I appreciate that these students require a unique blend of subject support, aptitude test preparation, application guidance, interview exposure and personal statement structuring. I have worked with numerous pupils on this process and have devised a series of modules designed to expose students to current medical issues and practice standards, extend their syllabus content for human biology (to prepare for academic interviews), and plan work experience placements. I have also worked with many students to secure their science GCSE targets, including provision of discreet tuition for a well-known VHNW family.
My recent achievements have included:
11+ scholarship offers for St Paul’s Girls, among others;
8s/9s in IGCSE science & maths;
Discreet tuition for a very well-known VHNW family in London;
A distinction grade for an MA dissertation (for which I provided consultation, feedback and proofreading);
Medicine offers for several Russell group universities;
“I am delighted to recommend Nick as a highly qualified and extremely professional tutor. He is already a gifted, natural communicator in the tutorial room with a real skill for developing knowledge and identifying gaps in the learning of his students and has a creative, original approach to encouraging and supporting them through the various difficulties they encounter. He is extremely organised, exceptionally thorough , and always ahead of the game in terms of the production of written reports, which I think are the best I have seen – sensitive, nuanced, detailed, but always getting unerringly to the key points.” – Anonymous

My Approach to Private Tuition
I believe tuition should be holistic and designed around a student’s individual needs and expectations. As a current student, I have a unique understanding of the requirements of my pupils. Throughout your sessions, I aim to help students identify their particular strengths, and utilize them to unlock full academic potential.
