My Passion & How I Inspire

I am passionate about teaching, because I think that passing on knowledge is always incredibly fulfilling. When I teach, I know that I can help others understand concepts that I have mastered. One of my most satisfactory teaching experiences and one that illustrates my approach to tutoring is when I helped my younger cousin improve her English language performance and raise her grade from a 5/10 to an 8/10. At the start, she was difficult. She “hated” English and had no intention to learn it. However, I shared with her my knowledge and experiences to show her why it was important for her to learn the language, and thus succeeded in getting her to appreciate what she was learning and to then flourish. I learned that the first step to success is igniting in the student a love, or at the least genuine appreciation, for the subject taught. It is after this happens that I always begin to see my students shine and achieve real results.

I treasure communication – both with students and with parents – because I believe that problems that arise can only be resolved by flagging them.

I am also a very clear and structured thinker. My classes are always sequential and I aim to build my student’s knowledge class by class. I cover topics in a logical order, grouping them according to a syllabus – either the one provided by the student or one that I create on the basis of the instructions I receive.

Overall, I aim to build a strong student-tutor relationship and a structured, rigorous and incentivising program of study that guarantees success as well as an in-depth and genuine understanding of the subject taught.

My Experience

I tutored children in English extensively. I was involved in a two year pro bono teaching project where I held two English classes per week, each with 3-4 students. For my younger group, I independently structured a one-year program of English grammar and conversation classes building upon the knowledge they acquired in school. For the older group, I followed their school curriculum closely in order to prepare them for the official state exam (“Esame di Terza Media, prova di Inglese”). I am therefore able to either tutor creatively and independently or to maintain a disciplined and rigorous teaching approach informed by a set syllabus.

I have also been privately tutoring students on and off for the past 6 years. I therefore developed an ability to cater to different student needs, to communicate knowledge ably and efficiently in a way that suits the learner and to create constructive relations with a great variety of different students.

During my IB, because I was the best performing student in our year, my teachers encouraged me to informally tutor my peers. I therefore have experience in passing on knowledge about IB course material and IB exam-taking techniques, skills essential to achieve a 7 in exams.

Finally, I was similarly involved in informal tutoring among members of my college’s Law Society throughout my undergraduate Law BA at Cambridge.
