My Passion & How I Inspire

I try my utmost to be a good listener and understand the concerns and opinions of a student – it’s their needs that I am trying to fulfil.

I elicit when I teach. I think apart from when a tutor first introduces the topic and providing basic understanding for the student, it is not right for a tutor to speak more than the student after this. Students need to get into the thick of things and test their new found knowledge on exercises and questions.

If a student makes a mistake, I won’t tell them that they made a mistake. Instead, I would question them and guide them to judge their own work to find their mistake and to understand why they made the mistake. That way, they will remember for next time.

I expect students to understand their mistakes to learn from it. An error culture is essential because it allows the student to be more expressive and reveal their concerns, otherwise the communication between the student and tutor will not be utilised properly.

I provide homework for nearly every lesson to consolidate work, and have a master spreadsheet to place marks on for each topic, that way I know where the student is excelling and where improvement is required.

At the end of the day, a tutor must tailor his or her work to the student’s needs, because there is no point in me teaching surds or integers for an hour if a student already knows these topics.

My Experience

I have tutored for a few years and taught various individuals that differed in levels of education (primary, secondary, sixth form) through an agency near my university at the time, plus teaching my course mates on a one-to-one basis at the library. I have also taught a few students in East London after university finished by word of mouth. I have helped students that have worked with OCR, Edexcel, and AQA exam boards.

I can move my ears without touching them. I also ate 10 slices of pizza in 15 minutes (true story).
