My Approach to Private Tuition

I like to approach lessons by ensuring the student is completely comfortable with the specific skillset needed to approach a subject, both for the purposes of sitting an exam and to give the best preparation possible for later learning. Learning knowledge is only helpful to a certain degree; having a stable learning framework, and more importantly, knowing how to learn, is what is crucial to achieving the best possible outcomes.

In English, I first and foremost would focus on essay writing technique, while in German, I would make sure the student had a highly detailed knowledge of grammar and the structure of the language. Only once the foundations are in place does mastering the subject become possible. Some people may call these learning “hacks” or “tricks”, but I think these “hacks” are the basis on which we can learn.

I also like to encourage a holistic approach to learning. It is important that students can view their subject in a wider context and draw relationships between subjects (most interestingly, between the seemingly unconnected ones!), and understand how to transfer the skills and techniques between subjects. This encourages consistent achievement across all subjects chosen.

Fun fact

I memorized the first Harry Potter book by heart when I was 7.
