I’m a friendly and enthusiastic tutor with an approachable teaching style. My aim is to cultivate a thoroughgoing work ethic in my students by providing them with a supportive environment in which to engage and experiment with the material at hand – from Key Stage 2 to undergraduate level.
I have a wealth of experience preparing students for common entrance tests, as well as A Level and university exams, and have a particular enthusiasm for creative writing and poetry comprehension. Having focussed on the poetry of T. S. Eliot for my Ph.D., and taught for a number of years on undergraduate poetry courses, I have cultivated a variety of techniques for opening any poem up to even the most sceptical student.
Since 2012 I have tutored a range of students in preparation for a variety of common entrance tests, and have had tutees accepted to Westminster, Winchester and Thomas’s schools.
Since 2010 I have taught on a variety of courses at Queen Mary University of London, including on poetry, theory and narrative fiction modules.
I have also helped students prepare for English Literature poetry A-Level exams set by the OCR exam board.

I could not be happier with Steven’s tutoring. […] Having lived in Central London and being part the private school system, we have had our fair share of tutors, and Steven surpasses them all by a mile. He brings real energy and passion to teaching and has an extremely high engagement level – all of which equals, effective learning and a visible and noticeable increasing of ability in the twins’ capabilities […] Steven is very professional, polite and punctual and provides relevant feedback at the end of each session. I find it very telling – and an accolade to Steven – that the twins are genuinely excited about their lesson with him […] and are extremely disappointed if we are holiday and he can’t teach them! By far, the best tutor we have ever used. (Ru B.)
SQJ has been teaching my son since September 2014. He is a very educated young man, friendly, reliable and a highly organized tutor. My son really enjoys his lessons with him. He is very trustworthy and he knows how to involve students. I highly recommend him as a tutor. (Sadaf B.)
In my spare time I write short fiction and the occasional academic article on the secret lives of the modernists!
