“I engage students in essay-based work, either through small practise papers or through discussion, where the student learns to use their own initiative to pick which existing knowledge is appropriate for the question. This eventually allows the student to feel comfortable in answering any range of questions that may show up in an exam. I also use quizzes to aid the student in remembering difficult names and dates, but also to keep the lessons light and rewarding. If a student is feeling overwhelmed or confused, I believe it is important to offer the opportunity to discuss the issue and break it down so the student has worked it out with me, so it is understood and retained well.”
