My approach to tutoring changes from student to student, and I tailor my methods in reaction to my first meeting. I like to create a strong bond with the student, creating targets in our first session which I guide the student towards throughout the coming months. I think it’s really important to acknowledge when these targets have been met, to clearly show that progress is being made.
I worked as an au pair for a year, looking after two young boys, so my approach is very patient, and I understand the importance of understanding each other. I like to know about the student’s wider interests so I can work this into the session, making it seem less like school and more like working through problems with a friend. I think vocalising issues, and working them out through talking is key to education, and tutoring offers the space to do this which a normal classroom does not.
I have lots of experience teaching English language to foreign learners, ranging from in a vocational college in Colombo, to being a private tutor in Amsterdam! In doing this, I tutored absolute beginners to professional level English.
I went to Yarm School and achieved 8 A*s and 3 As at GCSE, an A* in both English Literature and Fine Art and an A in Design and Technology at A-Level. I then went to the University of Manchester to study English Literature, where I received a First Class degree. I then went on to do a Masters in Art History at the Courtauld Institute of Art.
I was a teacher at a petting zoo!
