Throughout four years of tutoring I have come to the conclusion that the best approach to tuition depends on whether the student is looking for short term or long term help. Overall, however, the key to successful tuition aside from these differences is inspiring interest in the subject on the side of the student.
Long-term: I take a holistic method to working with students for more than a period of one week. By this I am referring to an understanding of the students needs and anxieties. I often find that students who I work with long term need a confidence boost as much as they do an academic boost. This is not about being a therapist, but about providing the tools necessary to improve motivation. One of these tools, perhaps surprisingly, is simply writing skills. I believe that the primary reason why people do badly in exams and in coursework in the social sciences is due to essay writing skills. You can have encyclopedic knowledge of a subject and still not be able to put pen to paper in a sophisticated and persuasive way. Indeed, the British education system only tests you on your writing (unlike the American system) but yet often fails to teach students how to write well. I would help to guide you through both the content of your course, and more importantly, the style of writing necessary to your subject.
Short-Term: When I work with students on a short-term basis I normally work as a proofreader and/or āco-writerā, aiding students to improve their essays which they have already written, or helping them to quickly structure a persuasive essay in a short period of time. Moreover, I help students structure their time so that they can complete whatever coursework or revision they need to do in time before the deadline. If the deadline is fast approaching (I have stayed up all night with students before deadlines) I can provide a fast paced resource to speed up your learning and/or writing.

Howard provided me with invaluable advice about my upcoming interview at Cambridge. Apart from giving me a mock interview over Skype, he read through the essays I had sent off as part of my application, provided me with practice passages to comment on and answered any questions I had. The sessions really boosted my confidence and helped focus my preparation. Many thanks for your help Howard.āØ- Nadia
Howard was a very helpful tutor, he excels in social sciences and any subject that would require essay writing skills. He has helped me with structure, organisation, thought process on examining skills and how to apply them, and most importantly he would teach you in a way that would help you understand things more clearly and effectively.āØ- Tom
I would strongly recommend Howard as a tutor, his honesty, and very measured approach would certainly bring outstanding results to those who might need some guidance throughout their academic studies. āØāØI will always be very thankful to Howard for his spectacular work and support that he gave me, throughout my final year at university. He made me fully achieve my goal. I moved from achieving pass/third marks to first class marks in the time spent with him as a tutor.āØ- Giuseppe
