Despite what you might think, I struggled at school when I was younger. Classroom learning can be boring and difficult. Teaching is too often formulaic and repetitive. It wasn’t until I started working independently that I began to experience success and develop a real love of learning.

One-on-one tuition can make a huge difference not only to a student’s results but to their attitude towards school. In my years of tutoring experience, I’ve helped dozens of students improve their grades, get into their first-choice schools, and ignite their passion for learning. It’s amazing what students can achieve when someone takes the time to understand their perspective, answer their questions and address their concerns. My tailored approach helps students to achieve their full potential.
The first step is to build confidence. Many students find the classroom intimidating and are terrified of giving the wrong answer. By creating a friendly environment and by emphasising that answers (even wrong ones!) are the first step to understanding, I can build a student’s confidence so that they are not afraid to tackle even the most difficult problems independently.
The second element of my approach is question-based. In the classroom, teachers lecture their students. Talking for minutes at a time means students lose interest and start thinking of other things. I ask friendly questions of my students, keeping them on their toes and testing their understanding. Making students the focus is the best way to keep lessons interesting and quickly identify any misunderstandings.
The final element of my approach is results-driven. Quickly identifying misunderstandings allows us to focus on each student’s concerns. This is the most efficient and most enjoyable way to improve results. I track each student’s progress using my own bespoke exercises and quizzes. Students are often shocked to see how quickly they’ve improved! The thrill of seeing real progress motivates students to push on, tackling harder problems and developing a real passion for learning.
I have been tutoring since 2011, during which time I have worked over 30 students and clocked up over 1000 hours. I have worked with students of all ages and levels: from Key Stage 1 all the way up to A-Levels and university preparation. My particular area of expertise is in Maths tutoring. I also have plenty of experience preparing students for entrance exams (7+, 8+, 11+, and 13+) and university entrance (including drafting and editing personal statements). Having attended both Oxford University and Cambridge University, I am very familiar with the application and interview process. I have helped prepare students for Oxford's MAT and Cambridge's STEP. I have also prepared students for interviews in Maths, Philosophy and Theology.
