My Passion & How I Inspire

Having had marvellous teachers at school, I found learning to be pure joy since an early age. Tutoring myself, I can pass on this experience, and I think I can give something back to my teachers, too. They would say: learning and teaching are two sides of the same coin.

Learning to speak Latin gave me an idea how to apply teaching methods of modern languages to the ancient language. A living approach adds the fun side to the solid grounding of grammar and vocabulary.

My Experience

After finishing school in Germany, I spent a gap year in Northern Ireland, working as a German assistant at Victoria College Belfast. I assisted German lessons and provided one-to-one sessions in conversation, which aimed at preparing students individually for their oral GCSE exams.

As I also worked as a boarding and early years assistant during my time in Belfast, I encountered many young people of different ages, and learned to deal with their varying pastoral and academic requirements.

I started tutoring when studying as an undergraduate in London, teaching German at key stage 2. One of my young tutees learned German as a “life learner”, which provided me with the special opportunity to organise the syllabus and to select learning resources independently from a school syllabus and according to individual needs and interests.

Since I started my Classics degree in London, I have been involved in “Living Latin” – a project initiated by UCL staff and students to promote a spoken approach to Latin. Now I volunteer for the Living Latin society, teaching a small group of beginners in Latin. Through speaking and reading exercises, building up the vocabulary and grammar step by step, the students actively engage and immerse themselves in Latin from the beginning.
