    My Experience

    2014–: Mandarin Tutor, London and Online
    I have coached four GCSE students towards an A*/A grade in their exam.
    I delivered the full AQA GCSE syllabus for a client whose school did not offer Chinese.
    I tailored a bespoke syllabus in Chinese for business for an adult complete beginner.
    I adapted resources for a student enrolled in the US Advanced Placement programme.

    2018: Classical Chinese Literature Tutor, Stanford at Oxford Programme
    I designed and delivered a full-time tutorial course for a Stanford College undergraduate.

    2016–2018: Modern and Classical Chinese Tutor, University, Queens, and Pembroke Colleges, Oxford
    I prepared and delivered Modern and Classical Chinese tutorials for undergraduate students.

    2017: English Teacher, Zhuoyue English College, Yangshuo, China
    I prepared and delivered two weeks of dynamic, drama-based lessons for 7–9-year-olds.

    2016: Classical Chinese Teacher, Oriental Institute, University of Oxford
    I prepared and taught core-syllabus Classical Chinese language to 15+ undergraduates.

    I prepared and delivered three lectures on thought and literature in early China.

    I supported the staff’s English learning as well as their personal and professional development.

    I developed a bespoke program of engaging, multimedia-based learning for a 9-year-old.

    I regularly receive superlative feedback. Most of my private tutoring relationships are maintained for a year or more, normally until the client completes their course and/or achieves their specified learning goal. My Oxford tutorial student from Stanford (2018) evaluated my overall performance at “5” out of 4 marks in official feedback, and my undergraduate Classical Chinese class (2016) nominated me for an Oxford University Student Union Outstanding Teaching Staff award.

    My Passion And How I Inspire

    I offer flexible Skype-based support to fit around the hectic schedules of the most ambitious students. My teaching is targeted and bespoke, with lessons planned in response to students’ specific long- and short-term goals, dovetailing, where applicable, with what’s covered at school.

    For students in Mandarin, I particularly enjoy helping students develop their spoken communication skills (speaking, pronunciation, listening) and confidence in spontaneous conversation, grammar knowledge, and study skills for memorising vocabulary and characters. As a native English speaker who has learned Mandarin as a second language, I understand the technical – and emotional! – challenges learners face, and am ideally equipped to guide clients at all stages of this process.
