I think it’s crucial as a tutor to be able to put myself in the shoes of my students in order to relate with them on both an academic and a personal level. A good relationship between tutor and tutee is the basis for productive sessions as communication is key. The subjects I teach, I teach them because I enjoy them and my primary goal as a tutor is to encourage my students to enjoy learning them as much as I do.
In my experience, an understanding of the subject is just as important as confidence in its application so my approach to tutoring in maths and the sciences is largely based on confidence building. I achieve this largely by working with the student through problems, discussing key concepts and working on exam technique, particularly for GCSE and A-level examinations.
I have been tutoring GCSE maths, biology, chemistry and physics since 2013.
