My Passion & How I Inspire

I believe that my passion for literature started around the age of 12, when I first read 'Life of Pi'. Although I didn't envy Pi his perilous boat ride, I did revel in the novel's ability to transport me from my bed to the distant Pacific Ocean. My journey with literature had begun, and I never looked back. I graduated with a degree in English literature from Trinity College, Cambridge, in 2018. I felt extremely fortunate to receive the world class undergraduate education that I did, and I'm keen to share the fruits of that education with other young people. I'm an enthusiastic, compassionate and hard-working individual, and I thoroughly enjoy tailoring my tutoring approach to the needs of each individual student; whether that means working out how to make them excited about their work, more disciplined in their approach to it, more confident in their abilities, or all of the above.

My Experience

I have tutored English Literature at A level, helping my tutee to achieve the A grade she needed to secure her place at Manchester University. I worked with this student for a number of six hour days during the Easter holidays, working on her technical vocabulary, essay writing skills and general exam approach. I also worked with her on a larger piece of coursework, for which she received a top mark and very positive feedback from her school teacher. I saw this student's confidence improve massively over the course of our sessions together, and it was rewarding to see how much she enjoyed engaging closely with her set texts, after spending a year reciting information without fully grasping what it meant. I tailored my sessions with her to the weaker areas that she and I had both separately identified in her work, and set her work which I graded in between our sessions.

I have also tutored English Language and English Literature at GCSE, helping my tutee to achieve an 8 (which is the equivalent of between an A and A*) in both of these exams. We had weekly sessions that were largely centred around his essay writing and making sure that he was getting his ideas and opinions down in a way that was clear, logical, and most likely to be recognised by someone grading his work. He came to better understand how much of the GCSE exam is about hitting certain marks in your work and was glad to learn how to use his own original ideas to this end. This student struggled with sustaining his attention levels for a protracted amount of time, and I feel that our sessions together really helped him with managing this. Going into his Easter holidays, we had some sessions that were more widely focused on exam preparation and revision skills.
