My Passion & How I Inspire

I believe communication is key – I will discuss a student’s goals and motivations for tutoring and create lesson plans accordingly. I will check in at the end of each lesson to ensure progress is being made and the student finds the sessions useful.

My approach to tutoring Law involves encouraging students to critically engage with the subject and consider each topic from multiple perspectives. I will advise on how to answer both problem questions and essay questions.

When I tutor Chinese I try to make lessons enjoyable and varied by involving oral, reading and writing elements. As a native speaker of Mandarin, Cantonese and English, I can tailor the amount of Chinese I speak in the sessions according to the student’s level of Chinese. If the student is a beginner, I can teach predominantly in English and slowly introduce more spoken Chinese in later lessons.

For admissions work, I focus on instilling confidence in applicants and myth-busting. I will help edit multiple drafts of personal statements, do mock interview sessions with students and give advice on how to improve exam technique for the LNAT and CLT. Regarding admissions tests, I focus on using past papers and practice questions as this is the best way for applicants to familiarize themselves with the types of questions that can be asked. I will include personal anecdotes in sessions to make the tests and interview process seem more accessible.

My Experience

Private Tutoring: I have tutored students International Baccalaureate Diploma English Literature and History. I also have experience teaching English, Chinese and History based on the IB Middle Years Programme Syllabus. As a former competitive debater, I have taught debate classes. Having attained A* grades in both GCSE and A-level Chinese, I am familiar with the examination format and criteria.

University Admissions: I have a lot of experience helping sixth-formers with Oxbridge admissions. I have given admissions talks at several international schools in Asia, helped edit drafts of Personal Statements and the SAQ (for Cambridge), and given mock interview training. A high proportion of the students I have helped have successfully received offers to study Law at either Oxford or Cambridge and are current students there.

I worked at the Cambridge Law Faculty Open Day, worked as a Peterhouse Student Ambassador for 2 years and was a Student Helper at the Peterhouse Open Day so I have in-depth insight into the admissions process.

As I had originally planned to apply to US universities and most students from my secondary school attend US universities, I have plenty of knowledge about the US admissions process, including admissions interviews. I will utilize my personal network to gain insight into each specific university’s admissions process. I was a student at Stanford University's Education Programme for Gifted Youth and its Online High School. I also attended summer school at Stanford for 2 years.

Theatre: I taught drama, musical theatre and communication skills to children ages 1-12 full-time in August 2015 and July 2016. I have also taught drama and English classes at secondary schools in Asia as part of the University of Cambridge Asia Theatre Tour in September 2017.
