As a tutor, my teaching philosophy is all about motivation and developing within each pupil the drive to learn and a confidence in their own ability; doing English for the love of the subject. I find that through tailor made lesson structures, customised to suit each child's particular needs and learning style, the best in everyone can be achieved. It is important to me that students learn for themselves through discovery and hard work; asking questions rather than simply following a text book.
I have always been a natural teacher; taking on the role of a peer mentor to under achieving year 7 pupils throughout secondary school (years 9-11), developing to be a subject captain for English, Drama, and Dance in sixth form (which involved running extra curricular subject based clubs), and being a qualified and active swimming coach since 2013. Moving from a state school to a top-class university (Cambridge) showed me the importance of hard work and not letting your background define your educational outcomes. For this reason during my first year at university I went on a 6-week tour of Northern India, working with children in slums and within charity settings to teach basic English and Drama knowledge to children aged 3-16.
Since graduating from The University of Cambridge (2018) I have tutored numerous candidates through KS3 and GCSE (AQA) English Literature and Language exams. I have thoroughly enjoyed the process of planning lessons and watching my students progress and develop confidence and a passion for the subject.
