My Passion & How I Inspire

I have said quite a lot about this in the section above but in summary, my approach to teaching is the same as my approaching to learning; if you have a good teacher you will be able to do more than just remember what they tell you - you will make it your own and feel inspired to go away practice.  I am a great fan of the tortoise – determination and persistence will help you make the most of the guidance you receive.   As a teacher my job is to diagnose what guidance you need and to make sure you understand how to achieve your goals. However I take no credit for you achieving those goals – that will be down to your own hard work!

My Experience

I started teaching over 10 years ago now, at Latymer Grammar School in Enfield which was, at the time, the top performing Grammar School in the country. As assistant head of 6th form as well as a history and politics teacher I helped many pupils polish and perfect their personal statements and practice for their much anticipated interviews. Each year we sent 30 or more pupils to Oxford or Cambridge and even more to medical, veterinary or dentistry schools.

I wanted very much, however, to develop my teaching to be able to reach not only to be able to stretch those at the top of the class but also to be able to help those in the middle make a leap forwards, or gain confidence and motivation. I therefore moved to Mill Hill School a little over 5 years again order to teach across a wider range of abilities and am happily settled there doing just that. Learners face many challenges – personal, emotional, organisational – and I enjoy helping each individual make progress and achieve their goals.

With a 2:1 from New College, Oxford and over 15 years spent in marketing in the Arts (London Philharmonic) and Industry (Coca-Cola) I can offer not just the clarity of insight and depth of knowledge needed to achieve outstanding results but sound advice in terms of life skills and career development. No pupil who I have helped to write a personal statement has ever failed to get an interview or an offer from their chosen university. I have tutored pupils in history and politics from a wide range of north London schools including Highgate, Haberdashers and Channing, all of whom have achieved As or A*s at GCSE or A level. The last two pupils I tutored at AS achieved 99% and 100% in their exams.

At school we had a very successful year with most of my GCSE set achieving one or two grades above their predictions and over 50% achieving A or A*. I take on relatively few pupils each year for private tuition so that I can give them the best of my attention. I am generous with my time and fully committed to helping those I teach realise their full potential.

My Video Introduction

Fun fact

I am a dedicated (some would say obsessed) ballroom dancer.  I train 6 or more hours a week and compete regularly.  I won my last two competitions in the Latin section and was placed 4th overall in both Ballroom and Latin at the National Finals at Blackpool last November!
