I believe being adaptable is key to being a tutor. Understanding that there are many different ways of explaining a topic. I spent 6 months teaching as a science teacher of ages from primary school to extension classes for A level students, and each student is unique and will grasp a concept if taught in the correct fashion. Creating an enjoyable environment is the key to learning and absorbing information.
Having co-founded a small tutoring business five years ago, I gained an understanding of what tutees are looking for and what an ideal tutor needs to be. Overseeing and also enjoying doing tutoring as well. Since then I have tutored over 40 different clients ranging from 11+ all the way to A levels.
In my gap year I was employed by my old school as an Outreach Science Teacher. I would go to under resourced schools and take maths and science lessons to yr 4 - yr 13 lessons, and after school would hold small revision sessions and I also ran early morning classes for primary school classes. Learning from experienced teachers how to bring different subjects alive was fascinating and it’s a skill that I utilize whenever I can.
