I have been teaching and tutoring for four years now, and have been a full-time private tutor since September 2016, with over 650 hours of tuition experience. I have successfully prepared students for entry to schools such as Highgate, Godolphin & Latymer, Ibstock Place and Cheltenham Ladies’.
Subjects I teach
11+ (English, Maths, Verbal Reasoning, Non Verbal Reasoning)
English up to 1st year undergraduate
English as a Foreign Language
I attended Wells Cathedral School as a Specialist Musician, gaining one A* and 3 As at A Level (in English Literature, Geology, Music and Italian). I edited the school-wide annual journal, was President of the Literary Society, had an article on Hemingway published in a national magazine and was awarded the Geology Prize in UVI.
I then read English Literature at the University of Oxford where I secured a high 2.i for my Bachelor’s degree, with my dissertation specialising in theological and social intersects in 20th century opera libretti.
I am also an Associate of Trinity College London, which is a diploma (with distinction) in singing, and will be starting my Master’s in vocal training at Guildhall School of Music and Drama in September. In addition to this I also have an 120-hour TESOL teaching certificate.
I am also a published author and have co-written three acclaimed textbooks for English Literature at GCSE and A Level within the ‘Art of Poetry’ series. Some of my contributions were reviewed as ‘remarkable’ by the English Association.
My Approach to Private Tuition
My approach to private tuition is that all subjects, in particular English, need a methodical and de-mystifying approach to allow students to do well in the subject. I come across lots of students who feel like they have no firm strategy or process for approaching comprehension and longer essays and as a result feel at a loss for what the ‘right’ approach or ‘right’ answer is.
I work to build the students’ confidence in developing personal strategies and patterns of thought to break down texts and for 11+, in wider Maths, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning.
All this is underpinned with an attitude of keen enthusiasm, fun and a sense of preserving and building a healthy and constructive attitude to work.
