I have been teaching at one of the UK’s leading law schools for over 10 years, having spent 5 years in professional practice at an international law firm. I am an associate professor and have extensive experience teaching business law on the LPC, together with associated skills and elective modules.
Over the years, I have taught students on LL.B, GDL, LPC, LL.M, MSc and PSC (Professional Skills Course) level courses, so I have a fantastic insight into what is required to pass legal exams at every level and succeed in this demanding profession.
I also now help teach teachers and head up my university’s PGCHE programme. As such, I have a really good understanding of how students learn best and aim to incorporate these principles into my teaching.
I left Simon Langton Grammar School with 3 A levels (all A grade), 2 S levels and 9 GCSEs (all A grade) and went on to read history at Cambridge University, graduating in 1996 with a BA (Hons). I then attended law school and graduated from the LPC with a distinction in 1999 before taking up my training contract at Lovells (now Hogan Lovells). I left practice in 2005 and have been teaching full-time since then, becoming an associate professor in 2017. I am also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (the professional organization for teachers in HE). In 2018 I was awarded my university campus’s Student Association Award for Best Tutor.
My Approach to Private Tuition
My approach to teaching is based on being passionate about what I do. I count myself lucky as someone who truly enjoys what they do for a living and I try to bring this passion into all my classes…and will do the same for our private sessions.
My philosophy is based on a number of clear, proven principles which I try to apply to all my teaching. I set out clear structures for you to work to; I will expect you to have high expectations of yourself as a learner; I try to build on the knowledge that you already have to help you make sense of new concepts and ideas; I encourage active and collaborative learning, so that you will “learn by doing”; and I use continuous, meaningful feedback to guide your future learning. Ultimately, my role is to bring out the best in students by facilitating their own learning, through structure, guidance and feedback, not simply to spoon-feed answers!
