My Experience

I started my teaching in 2010 training in two comprehensive schools in The Midlands. My NQT year was completed at a comprehensive school in Burton-Upon-Trent where I taught KS3 English and Drama, KS4 English and Media and KS5 English Literature. I then moved to London to take a job at an Ofsted Outstanding Catholic school in Southwark where I took three GCSE classes to 100% pass rates. My specialism at the school steered towards KS5, UCAS applications, Oxbridge and Russell Group interviews and aiding with work experience placements for KS4 and KS5 students. In September 2015 I moved to Reigate in Surrey to work at an independent school and was shortly offered the position of Second in Charge of English with a focus on whole school literacy and have co-designed the 11+ and 13+ entrance examinations at my current school. I also aid with interviewing and selecting candidates for the first and third year uptake. For the last two years I have been an examiner for AQA and iGCSE higher tier literature papers.

I have been working as a private tutor for six years aiding with PGCE students, Masters and Undergraduate students with academic writing and university applications. Furthermore, I edit university essays and have aided with the design of the Masters in Architectural Design course for Nottingham Trent University. The majority of my tutoring experience has been adult English learners (Japanese and Arabic) and GCSE and A-Level English Language and Literature tuition.

My Qualifications

I read English at Queen Mary, University of London (BA 2.1 hons) and completed an internship in journalism in Los Angeles. When I returned to the UK I finished a diploma in Freelance Journalism and then started my PGCE in Secondary English at The University of Nottingham in 2009. I was offered a place on the Masters course and completed a Masters in Education (Med) in 2014. I am currently awaiting a place on the ISQAM level one course, starting in September.

My Approach to Private Tuition

I love getting to know my students and understanding the individual needs they have. Due to my current focus on whole school literacy, I have a wide range of teaching methods and resources to use in lessons; I like to get the most out of my students by varying the learning experience. The beginning of the course starts with skills for information retrieval and understanding, and as this grows, I focus on the higher order thinking skills and enable students to relate their learning to the wider world and their own experiences. I also like to show students that English does not always have to be reading and writing; I have a great love of films and graphic novels and like to act as a mentor for my students, showing them the ways in which English skills can be used in everyday life and widening their knowledge of the world.
